It is common to experience mild irritation, light sensitivity, dry eyes, and blurry vision during the initial recovery period. These symptoms typically subside within three to six months.
The thin flap created during Femto LASIK usually heals without intervention. However, in rare cases (0.3% to 5.7%), complications such as Irregular Astigmatism, Epithelial Growth, Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis, and Keratectasia may occur.
Although infections after Femto LASIK are rare, they can be further prevented by using prescribed medicated eye drops as directed.
In the SMILE procedure, numbing eye drops are applied before a speculum is positioned to keep the eye open. The surgeon uses femtosecond laser technology to create and extract a lenticule, correcting the vision. The entire process takes around 10-15 minutes, with the laser used only briefly. Patients are allowed a short recovery period before leaving.
Recovery times vary, but most individuals heal within three to six months. Patients must wear an eye shield for 24-48 hours and attend follow-up appointments. It is advised to avoid swimming, sports, and beauty products (lotions, creams, cosmetics) for at least a month.
LASIK is a safe, FDA-approved procedure recommended for individuals above 18 years of age. A series of tests determine eligibility for the surgery. Those who qualify for LASIK generally qualify for SMILE as well.
LASIK is not a low-cost procedure due to the expense of consumables like the Patient Interface. In Pune, the surgery starts at approximately Rs. 60,000.
